Get ready, tributes! The world of Panem is opening up once more, and this time, we're going back to witness the Games that forever changed the life of one of the most compelling Victors: Haymitch Abernathy!

What is the Story?

Sunrise on the Reaping takes us back twenty-four years before Katniss Everdeen enters the arena, to the day of the Fiftieth Hunger Games—the Second Quarter Quell. This Quarter Quell comes with a devastating twist: twice the number of tributes are reaped from each district.

The story begins in District 12, on the morning of the Reaping, which also happens to be Haymitch's 16th birthday. All he wants is to keep his family safe and build a future with his sweetheart, but when his name is called, everything shatters. Torn from his life and thrust into the Capitol with three other District 12 tributes—including his young friend Maysilee Donner, who possesses the original Mockingjay pin—Haymitch quickly realizes he's been set up to fail.

But in the deadly, elaborate arena of the Second Quarter Quell, a part of him is determined to fight back and make his defiance resonate far beyond the Games themselves.

Why You Need to Read This

  • Haymitch's Origin Story: Finally, delve into the tragedy that turned the fiercely loyal, yet jaded and alcoholic, mentor we know into the last surviving Victor of District 12 before Katniss.

  • The Second Quarter Quell: Experience one of the most brutal and memorable Games in Panem's history, where the arena itself is a deadly paradise, designed to kill.

  • Deeper Themes: Inspired by philosopher David Hume’s idea of "implicit submission," Suzanne Collins explores the power of propaganda and the media narrative, challenging us with the series’ most pressing question: "Real or not real?"
