Hiro Arikawa
Hiro Arikawa is a celebrated author who first gained recognition after winning the tenth annual Dengeki Novel Prize for new writers in 2003 with her debut work Shio no Machi: Wish on My Precious. Published the following year, the novel was praised for its touching love story between a heroine and hero separated by age and social status, as well as its detailed portrayal of military structures. Although Arikawa began as a light novelist, from her second book onward, her works have been published in hardback alongside more literary titles, receiving special treatment from her publisher, MediaWorks.
One of her most notable works, the 2006 light novel Toshokan Sensō (The Library War), was named Hon no Zasshi’s top entertainment book for the first half of 2006. It also ranked fifth in the Honya Taishō awards that year, competing against mainstream novels. Arikawa frequently explores themes related to the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) in her writing, particularly in her first three novels known collectively as the Jieitai Sanbusaku or The SDF Trilogy. Additionally, she created the fictional Library Forces featured in the Toshokan Sensō series.
Another interesting aspect of her work is Raintree no Kuni, which originally appeared as a book within a book in Toshokan Nairan before being published as a spin-off by a different publisher. This novel was adapted into the film World of Delight, released on November 21, 2015. Furthermore, her novel Shokubutsu Zukan has been adapted into a movie titled Shokubutsu Zukan: Unmei no Koi, Hiroimashita, which was scheduled for release on June 4, 2016.
Hiro Arikawa’s unique blend of heartfelt storytelling and her thoughtful integration of military and social themes continue to captivate readers and bring her works to wider audiences through various adaptations.
